A great novel deserves a smashing musical. We're looking forward to it.

I have read both of the author's novels (this one and her earlier Bitter Taste of Time). In both , I was immediately struck by the lyrical quality of the prose. Often, I found myself stopping mid-paragraph or even mid-sentence to reread a particularly beautiful passage or turn of phrase, sometimes three or four times before delving further into the magical world she'd created. It was akin to the feeling I get when listening to a particularly lovely piece of music that touches me so instantly and deeply that I must listen again and again to take in the full richness of the sound. Ms. Gonzalez's writing is like a beautiful song that plays in your head long after you put down her books. Her writing creates a mood that follows you around for weeks before letting go and then pops back into your mind quite suddenly when events months or years later stir the same emotions. I look forward to seeing how Mr Purcell's opera compares to the one my own mind created for me as I read this beautiful novel. And, I congratulate both of these artists for sharing their vision with the rest of us.

How wonderful and fitting that Bea Gonzalez's vivid novel will be brought to the stage in the form of a musical. As a book-lover and fan of Bea's work, I confess I worry that my favourite characters will not look or sound exactly as I imagined them but in this case, it's very exciting that Bea's rich and lyrical language will be put to music! If only Oz weren't so far away! I await the world tour.
