The very name Atlantis fascinates each one of us. Could the story of the Lost Continent be more than just ancient myth? An engrossing narrative and a gloriously rich score combine to make “Atlantis” a most satisfying theatrical experience.

THE STORY

The year is 2010 CE and, in New York, the UN Secretary-General is presiding over an emergency meeting of the Security Council. When the members are asked to vote on a course of action that will impact on the very future of the planet, deadlock is reached: the crucial, deciding vote now falls to the Secretary-General.

Withdrawing to his office to deliberate, he drifts into reverie and finds himself in the Lost Continent in the year 9564 BCE, where he is known by the name of Altazar. Atlantis has reached its zenith, but its traditional values are being challenged by a powerful faction whose intentions are far from benevolent. As the very fabric of Atlantean society disintegrates, Altazar witnesses the chain of events that ultimately leads to a mighty cataclysm, resulting in the continent’s annihilation.

Returning to the present, the Secretary-General is now able, as a result of his dream – or possibly, his personal recollection – to make a wise and informed decision.

THE STORY

After the tragic death at sea of his captivating wife, Rebecca, Maxim de Winter leaves Manderley, his beloved country estate in Cornwall, to seek solace on the French Riviera. There, by chance, he meets a young woman – (the paid companion of a New York socialite, Edith Van Hopper) – with whom he falls in love and marries.

Returning to England with his bride, he has every expectation of escaping the past. However, his real troubles are only now beginning. The ‘new’ Mrs. de Winter, ingenuous and inexperienced, is ill-equipped to be the mistress of Manderley; moreover, she must deal with the bitter resentment and antagonism of the house-keeper, Mrs. Danvers. But of even greater concern to Maxim is the ominous manifestation of the ghost of Rebecca, who is determined that the ‘happy couple’ shall know no peace.

In an attempt to maintain some vestige of continuity between past and present, Maxim agrees to hold the popular, annual Manderley Ball. Cruelly duped by Mrs. Danvers, his young wife dresses in the same costume that Rebecca had worn at the last ball. Maxim’s reaction of anger on the night is cut short by the dramatic announcement of a shipping accident in the nearby harbour. In the ensuing salvage operation, Rebecca’s sailing boat is discovered; and in it, her body.

An inquest is ordered and duly held. During the course of the hearing a succession of startling revelations unfolds. The de Winters manage to survive this threatening ordeal, and their future life together is safeguarded…but at a costly price.
