On Matters of Casting – Part 2

Let’s talk about the cast of very excellent men in The Mapmaker’s Opera!

All the male roles in this show require quite starlingly different skill sets from each other.  It’s not the difference in their vocal attributes (they’re all exceptionally fine singers by the way) or the requisite movement skills or demanding acting chops needed; it is something about the nature of the inner person to be revealed through book, lyrics and music that have to be traversed in The Mapmaker’s Opera that makes these men exceptional.

The one thing about this show that most, if not all, people would concur is that it’s not easy.  The characters that these men play are uniformly complex, flawed, fragile, contrary, and ultimately complicit in the denouement that is the heart-rending climax of the story.  From the outset, I wasn’t entirely convinced that, with only a limited time available to cast The Mapmaker’s Opera in New York, we would uncover actor/singers up to this task – but I was wrong.  And we’re so grateful that we have them onboard.  They’re fabulous, so come along and, in tandem with our stellar cast of women (see previous post), see what they can do!
